Plastic Free Seas is a Hong Kong based charitable non-governmental  organization. The focus is on real solutions to reduce our local plastic trash problems with programs designed for education, research & action.
Plastic Free Seas

Plastic Free Seas gives talks on local and global  issues , has worked with schools to integrate plastic pollution education within the science & art curriculum , advises on plastic pollution student projects and uses art to raise awareness throughout the community.  A Corporate Beach Cleanup Program engages companies in cleanup activities as well as assessing office environments for waste reduction strategies for both personal & corporate benefits.

In 2012 Plastic Free Seas lead the Hong Kong wide cleanup of plastic resin pellets where 150 tonnes of tiny plastic beads were lost at sea during Typhoon Vicente.  Approximately 8000 volunteers, many NGOs, several key corporations including SINOPEC (the pellet producer) and government were mobilized in a successful 4 month long effort.  As a result of this cleanup effort the Government was incentivised by public support to introduce The Clean Shorelines Campaign in an effort to identify source points of all the trash on the beaches and implement measures to reduce this.

One of the goals of Plastic Free Seas is to learn and share information with other NGOs focussed on this area as we are all working locally on a global issue.  For this reason we were keen to come to Taipei.  Hong Kong Government is modelling its new waste reduction methods on Taiwan's infrastructure so it was a good opportunity for us to come and see what works elsewhere and how we can learn about our neighbour's practices.

We were also very excited to have supported the World Oceans Day - Love Your Ocean Home exhibition and we were happy to be able to visit.  There was an incredible amount of attention to detail and care which resulted in an inspiring and educational display.  The creative use of beach waste & single use items set amongst natural backdrops highlighted the issues that are of real significance to us, our environment & all other creatures .

One of the highlights of the visit was meeting The SOW team.  An evening presentation and discussion was a great way to share effective communication strategies and action programs.  Followed up the next day with a trip out to the North Coast & Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration to see the fantastic Ocean Passenger exhibition & Baisha Bay. Having the opportunity to meet the SOW people making a real impact in Taiwan with their education, awareness and cleanup programs was very positive, certainly the start of a good relationship and hopefully the first of many visits.
